New York City Car Insurance

Greenpoint Brooklyn New York City Traffic

If you own a vehicle  and it is registered in New York you must carry New York car insurance. According to NY State laws all vehicles must have insurance issued by a company that is authorized to sell vehicle insurance in the State of New York.  No out of state insurance is allowed. The minimum amount of coverage that you are allowed to have is $25,000/50,000 for any injury, $50,000/ $100,000 for a death, and property damage of $10,000. You have to maintain this coverage at all times while the vehicle is registered in New York.  Even if you move to another state, as long as your vehicle is registered in New York you must carry New York car insurance.

Your car insurance, must be under the same name as the registered owner of the vehicle and must be with you at all times while you are operating your vehicle.  Any name change on your  car insurance to a different name other then the cars registered owner will cause a lapse in your car insurance. Anytime you are registering a vehicle in New York you must show a New York State Insurance Identification Card before you will be able to register your vehicle. It must be under the same name as you are wanting to register your vehicle under and must have a bar code. You will be issued two of these cards, one is for you to keep the other is for the Department of Motor Vehicle.

Your insurance company must also provide an electronic notification to the Department of Motor Vehicles. You have 45 days to present your identification card after getting your auto insurance.  If you have a lapse in your insurance you will have to give up your vehicle plates to the DMV. If your insurance lapse is longer then 90 days your license will also be suspended. If you fail to comply by surrendering your plates your driving license will be suspended indefinitely. The only way to avoid giving up your plates in the event your  insurance has a lapse is to pay a civil penalty.

The civil penalty is: $8 per day that your insurance is lapsed from the 1st day till the 30th day.
$10 per day from the 31st day until the 60th day your insurance is lapse.
$12 per day from day 61 to day 90 of the lapse.

As you can see not having auto insurance and trying to operate your vehicle can end up causing you allot of stress and costing you allot more money in the long run. If you should happen to have an accident while you are driving your vehicle without insurance the financial impact could be tremendous, and you may even have to spend time in jail for failing to obey the laws.

Finding the the right automotive coverage at an affordable rate is very easy to do.  Most insurance companies will compete with each other to give you the best quote possible. If you have any traffic related issues such a speeding or failure to stop, or even Driving while under the influence your premiums will be higher. You may even have to carry " High Risk" insurance. This can be very costly, but not near as costly as if you were to have an accident or get pulled over by a police officer driving your vehicle without proper insurance. There are many insurance agencies available and ready to help you get your auto  coverage today.
