New York City apartments can either be rented by the month or purchased to be owned. Most people in the city own their own apartment then choose to rent them out to add extra revenue to thier portfolio. This article is for those who are selecting to rent rather then to purchase.
If you are considering a move to New York City and are thinking about renting an apartment, the most important thing to understand is that the initial costs are going to be very expensive.
To give you a general idea of the costs involved, monthly rent in the city ranges from: $1800 to $2500 for a studio, $2000 to $4000 for a one bedroom, $3500 to $6000 for a two bedroom and $4500 to $9000 plus for a three bedroom. Of course these are just average prices, in all honestly "the sky" is virtually the limit on rentals in the city. You can pay much higher depending on what area of the city you want to live in, what features you want, if you are willing to walk up to your apartment or you prefer an elevator, and whether you want it furnished or not. All these factors play a part in the monthly rental fee.
Some of the initial costs would include your agents fees, deposit which is usually equal to 1 to 2 months rent, first and sometimes last months rent, an application fee which is usually about $200 to $400, building deposit (which may be refundable if no damage is done to the building moving in and out) which can range upwards to $600. And you will have to pay the cost of a credit report which all New York landlords will want.
You will want to have an agent to help you locate your apartment. Having your own agent ensures that you are getting the best deal possible and also helps speed up the process of looking for an apartment in New York to living in an New York apartment.
Another thing you will want to consider is downsizing. Going through the things you intend to bring with you and ensuring that these things are really things you are going to need. Having allot is not always a good thing, especially in the city. The more you have the harder it will be on you, storage is not easily found and can get quite expensive. Once you find the home of your dreams, you may find that it is on the 7th floor and has no elevator, that means you are going to have to tote all those things up to your apartment. One idea would be to sort all the essential items and the items that you can not bare to part with, these items that represent you, and all that you are and keep those. You can have a garage or yard sell to get rid of your other things and use that money to help on the initial cost of your New York City apartments.
