Welcome to The Bronx the only New York City borough that is on the mainland of the United States.
The Bronx is a borough of New York City where community efforts have played a strong role in the revival and quality of life within the borough. The community members of the Bronx, and groups associated with South Bronx churches have been working together to create affordable housing in the area. This is increasing the quality of life in the borough and has helped to influence more businesses to develop branches within borough. There has been significant construction of new buildings in the area, over 33,000 new housing units were built between the years 2002 and 2007. Lots that stood vacant are now homes to new buildings bringing a sense of community to an area that once, not to long ago had almost abandoned hope.
The borough as a whole is one of the poorest area's in the United States. Twenty eight percent of families and 30.7% of the population in the Bronx were below the poverty line, this includes 41.5% under 18 and 21.3% over 65.
In 1977 President Carter visited The Bronx, his visit prompted the media to record widespread deterioration and destruction of the urban areas. The result was a powerful negative image given of The Bronx around the United States and throughout the world. The community has taken huge strides to reverse that image which resulted in the National Civic Council designating The Bronx as an "All American City".
